First confirmed during this year's PlayStation Showcase, developer Hadoque has shared a fresh look at the psychedelic PS5, PS4 indie game Ultros. Slated to release in 2024, you can catch a glimpse of the 2D title's first few minutes, where it introduces the colourful world protagonist Ouji is set to explore. Take a look above.
With a focus on platforming and combat, you'll find your place inside an ecosystem where you must eat the body parts of enemies to increase your variation nutrition levels. You'll accomplish the same by planting and eventually eating fruit, a mechanic introduced in the trailer footage. "When you reach a rest point, you can unlock new abilities on a skill tree (or cortex, as we call it) depending on your nutritional requirements and what you consume," game design director Mårten Brüggemann explains on the PlayStation Blog.
He continues: "Ouji collects The Extractor in the latter half of the gameplay. The Shamans used this tool in their ritual on this space station. So, it’s important for the main plot of the game. But it also provides some cool power-ups. This first one grants us a double jump."
What do you make of Ultros so far? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Really like the style of this. Hope this is good!
I’m a little burnt out of Metroidvanias after playing through several of them (probably between 2 or 3 dozen of them or so) the last maybe 5 or so years, but this one looks interesting to me. When the genre is good, it’s so outstanding. I’m hoping this one is. I’m not usually into psychedelic imagery, but something seems like it could be right with this one
Yawn. Another “retro” 2D indie game.
@MasterChiefWiggum I'd rather that than another £70 AAA loot fest.
I love the art style and the game looks fun enough
The issue I have sometimes with these extreme artistic games is that it can be very difficult to follow the action (especially in games like shmups). Will I be able to discern enemies from background quick enough to react? I hope they'll find a good balance as the game looks really good....
It looks original I never understand why people complain? If you don't like it there is so much to play nowadays. This looks more original then most triple A stuff less complaining and buy what you like.
@Smiffy01 It doesn’t have to be one or the other.
@MasterChiefWiggum Yeah that's true, i personally feel there's too much RPG focused elements in a lot of games now, i guess i prefer more arcade based experiences nowadays, maybe my age lol
@Smiffy01 I hear you. I’m an old fart myself! I like the RPG elements of modern games, but also really like a good, focused arcade type experience as well. Depends on my mood!
Another indie game trying to be retro, yawn!! I'll stick with actual retro stuff. Plus this Metroidvania stuff is getting as boring the endless Soulsborne crap.
This looks bonkers and totally awesome!
@Olmaz I definitely had that issue with Sundered, where I constantly lost track of my own character in all the action. And that wasn't even as stylized as this one.
It looks interesting, but this is a packed genre so time will tell if it manages to stand out in a positive way. I'm not sold on that UI though, the font on those pickups doesn't really scream clarity and readability.
